Wireless navigation and local search solutions provider Networks In Motion announced its acquisition of real-time traffic information provider TrafficGauge. Financial terms were not disclosed. According to NIM, the acquisition of the TrafficGauge staff will bolster its efforts to develop the next iteration of its Traffic Sharing System, which will expand on the traffic feeds component introduced in the fourth version of its NAVBuilder platform.
NIM notes that all drivers using its navigation service help to generate “traffic sharing” information–the firm will now leverage TrafficGauge’s company’s data-aggregation server technology to offer consumers improved traffic flow accuracy and detour calculations. NIM adds that the TrafficGauge deal does not herald a departure from its existing focus on location services for the mobile platform, and that it has no plans to enter the merchant traffic data business.
